Everybody wants whiter teeth. Your smile is one of the first things others will notice and will leave a lasting impression! Professional teeth whitening services can be an effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth surface. Giving you a brighter whiter smile!
Throughout life teeth will discolour with age and food substances e.g. such as tea, coffee, red wine. Some people may have staining under the surface, which can be caused by certain antibiotics or tiny cracks in the teeth which take up stains.
There is a direct correlation between tooth color and age. Over the years, teeth darken as a result of wear and tear and strain accumulation. The process of professional tooth whitening clears the stain and makes your teeth look whiter. However, one should keep in mind that the results may vary from person to person.
What does teeth whitening treatment involve?
Professional Whitening is the most common form of to whiten your teeth. Teeth whitening treatment can be carried in the following ways:
- Professional home whitening
- Professional chairside whitening
- Combination of both the above
We will advise you of the best teeth whitening treatments to improve the appearance of your teeth.
Professional home whitening
Your dentist will need to make a custom fit tray and will take impressions for this at the first appointment. On the second visit the tray and some whitening gel will be provided for you to use at home.
The trays with the gel should be worn a minimum of two hours a day on daily basis, but most patients tend to wear them over night.
If the instructions are followed maximum results are seen usually after 10-14 days of use.
Professional chairside whitening with ZOOM!
This is chairside whitening or ‘power whitening’. During this process whitening gel is used with the Zoom! light. The light speeds up the chemical reaction of the whitening product and the colour change can be achieved more quickly using this procedure. Your teeth may improve up to on average eight shades lighter.
Extensive clinical research and studies have shown that teeth whitening under the supervision of your dentist is safe. As with any tooth whitening product it is not recommended for children under 16, pregnant or lactating women and patients undergoing PUVA therapy/chemotherapy or patients who have melanomas. If you take light sensitive drugs please consult you physician.
Some people may find that their teeth become sensitive to cold during or after the professional tooth whitening. These symptoms are usually temporary and should disappear within a few days of the treatment finishing.
Your teeth will become whiter than they once were. There may be a need to ‘touch up’ once or twice a year. This is a simple process of wearing your custom trays with the gel in for 1-2 days.
The effect is best achieved if you reduce smoking, or eating or drinking products that can stain your teeth.
