Air Polishing: Removing Built-Up Staining From Teeth

Staining that has built up on the surface of the teeth does not always come off with brushing. Air polishing is one of the things we use to remove it: a jet of air, water and fine powder played over the teeth to lift the staining away.

What it removes, and what it does not

Air polishing works on staining that sits on the tooth — the kind that builds up over time from food, drink and smoking. It does not change the natural colour of the tooth underneath. That is a different treatment, and worth being clear about before you book: if the shade of your teeth is what you want to change, whitening is the conversation to have, not this.

How much staining comes away, and how much of a difference that makes, varies from person to person — it depends on what the staining is, how long it has been there and the condition of the teeth and gums underneath. The only way to know what is realistic for you is to have it looked at.
